Bill Maher's "Towel Headed Hos"

For all his chauvinistic, misogynistic and racist drivel, old man Imus finally got the boot. I can't say I feel particularly bad, considering his confederate-style punditry and his perpetuation of negative imagery of the non-white males our society, but I still think people are missing the point..

The Politics of Pragmatism

The latest back and forth between Israel and the Palestinian unity government (and its regional interlocutors) will not bring peace to fruition. Many respected commentators in the Middle East have accused Israel of rejecting peace, primarily due to its refusal to fully embrace the Arab peace initiative.

All Roads Lead to Checkpoints

There may have been a period when all roads led to Rome, but for the Palestinian people, all roads lead to checkpoints. The latest checkpoint Palestinians find themselves at is not manned by Israel but rather the ostensible mediator of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the Quartet.

One Country: Reviewing an Alternative Vision

Ali Abunimah's new book, One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse, exposes the impracticality of partition and presents an alternative vision, one that encompasses both peoples on the basis of equal rights. The vision Abunimah presents is a one state solution.

Unmasking the Second Palestinian Intifada

Over the last five years, the Palestinian people have faced a host of obstacles in their fight for sovereignty, preventing them the opportunity to create a life those in the Western world brag about. A principal impediment facing the Palestinian struggle today is the constant reaffirmation that the Palestinian people-deemed by Israel and the US-are "terrorists," "militants," or animalistic beings lesser than those of the "civilized world." In Ramzy Baroud's new book, The Second Palestinian Intifada: A Chronicle of People's Struggle, this myth is shattered.

Hazardous Intent

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is back in the Middle East and she is in a "very concerned" state. For someone who has played Israeli ambassador to the Middle East since her tenure began, her on again, off again call for the plight of the Palestinian people has become more predictable than orange alerts during election season.

Tolerating Intolerance

Pope Benedict XVI is not having a good week, and yet he doesn't seem to mind. Upsetting one out of every five people living today may be of no concern for His Holiness-made evident by his half-hearted, "sorry my infallible words offended you" apology-but one can surely understand why some Muslims took offense to his recent speech.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Bomb!

Ladies and gentlemen, grab your rockets and start firing. The sovereign state of Lebanon must respond to the gross violation of UN resolution 1701, by destroying Israel if necessary. The Lebanese population cannot wake up every morning, wondering if their rogue state of a neighbor is going to drive them into the sea or possibly up to the mountains (it depends which direction the Israeli forces drop in from).

Losing its Morals and Marbles: Israel's Fight for Lebanon

If Hezbollah were a military, given Western standards, it would certainly be the most moral in the world. During Israel's five week offensive, Hezbollah killed 118 Israeli soldiers and 41 Israeli civilians (18 of which were Israeli Palestinians). Hezbollah killed three Israeli soldiers for every one Israeli civilian. In contrast, Israeli forces killed more than 1000 Lebanese civilians during the onslaught.

Out to Lunch

The US media's biased coverage of the crisis in Lebanon should come as no surprise. While the White House and Congress claim a "special relationship" with Israel, our news outlets are not supposed to have a "special relationship" with anyone. Their job is to fairly reports on matters; anything less is a disservice to those watching their news programs and reading their newspapers.

The Politics of Proportionality

For many Americans, the recent assault on Gaza and Lebanon makes perfect sense. Two attacks on Israeli soldiers by groups in Gaza and Lebanon, and the subsequent capture of three Israeli prisoners, were "unspeakable provocations," but a sordid feeling overcomes all those who have been closely watching the events unfold in the Occupied Territories and Lebanon.

When Civilians Become Targets: The Israeli Destruction of Lebanon and Gaza

In the last two weeks, Israel has sent a chilling message to the Palestinian and Lebanese people: civilians and infrastructure are legitimate targets in their war of aggression. The Geneva Conventions have been fragrantly violated and humanitarian law has been thrown into the garbage can.

Missing the Point and the Target

The recent Israeli artillery strikes on the Gaza Strip have outraged Palestinians, raised eyebrows in the international community, prompted condemnation from human rights organizations, and put the Israeli government on the defensive.

Witnessing the Destruction of Gaza

On Tuesday, June 13, Israeli missile fire killed seven Palestinian civilians in Gaza City. Among the dead were two children. The strike follows an Israeli assault on a Gaza beach late last week which claimed the lives of seven family members-including five children.

Humanizing the Other

The emergence of Arab art in New York City has surprised many. Specifically, the Made in Palestine exhibit, which opened at the Bridge in March of 2006, drew in large crowds. The battle of bringing the show to New York, however, was no shock.

Multilateral Collusion

The international community has spoken: it opposes a unilateral withdrawal from the Occupied Territories. But it opposes a unilateral withdrawal much like I oppose Britney Spears having more children-it is not actually going to do a damn thing about it.

The Existing Question

May 15 marked the 58 year anniversary of Al Nakba (The Catastrophe). Every year, Palestinians recount the tragedy of 1948. I recall my grandmother's anguish: she was seven months pregnant with my mother when she was forced to flee to Lebanon by boat.

Call a Spade a Spade

How long is a sane man expected to sit on his hands while his enemy slaps him in the face? The Palestinian people have endured a prolonged aggression by a pariah state, and yet the world not only expects them to sit on their hands, the world blames them for it.

Assaulting Cynthia McKinney

Joe Scarborough, political hack and host of Scarborough Country on MSNBC, went on yet another odious rant on April 3. This time his scurrilous remarks were aimed at six-term Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.

US Media Bias: Covering Israel/Palestine

On July 18, 2005 14 year old Ragheb al-Masri sat in the back of a taxi with his parents at the Abo Holi checkpoint. An Israeli bullet penetrated his back and cracked open his chest. His mother screamed as his body lay lifeless. Have you heard his name? ...

Accepting Reality: America Lost the War in Iraq

America has lost the war in Iraq. The chance for victory vanished long ago with the hearts, minds, arms, legs and lives of the Iraqi people. The insurgence hasn't won; rather the American government never obtained the formula to win....
